Modernizing Communications | Pettigrew Regional Libraries

About

The Pettigrew Regional Library system serves approximately 50,000 residents across four counties in Eastern North Carolina: Chowan, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties. These libraries play an important role in connecting rural communities to essential services. Each branch offers internet access, public computers, children’s programs and activities, printing and faxing services, as well as a wide selection of books and magazines to create a welcoming and trusted space for residents.

Overview

Shortly after stepping into his role as Director of the Pettigrew Regional Library system, Nate King made it a priority to replace the library’s outdated phone system. Since reliable communication is necessary for all the branches, Nate wanted a solution that would be efficient for the staff and effective for patrons. All four branch locations were already set up with Brightspeed Business for Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) and Ethernet services, so Nate decided to simplify and modernize their phones by adding Brightspeed Business Voice+ with RingCentral to support all the locations.

The Challenge

Nate joked that the legacy phone system was likely “from the 80s,” but the struggle was very real. The system couldn’t keep up with the way the Pettigrew Regional Library system operates today. Managing the phones across four branches was cumbersome and made everyday communication frustrating for both staff and patrons.

“There was a lot of buzzing and the call quality was very poor. It was hard to listen to what people were saying,” Nate reported.

And since each branch is different in size and needs, the best option was for a more modern, flexible solution that could support the entire organization.

Engineering Solution

At a previous business review, the Brightspeed team walked Nate through the full portfolio of services. After weighing his options, Nate filled out Brightspeed’s online form and company rep, Greg VanMeter, reached out to discuss details on Brightspeed Business Voice+ with RingCentral. By the end of that conversation, it became clear that Voice+ was the right solution for Pettigrew Regional Libraries.

Because each branch was already using Brightspeed for internet services, adding Voice+ was a natural next step. Consolidating these services simplified operations, and the combo of innovative technology, responsive support, and Brightspeed’s understanding of public sector needs made this an easy decision for Nate.

The project included replacing the outdated phone system at the four Pettigrew Library branches with 20+ new VoIP phones and headsets. While there were some obstacles with setup, Nate says he was able to get answers from customer care when it came to manually connecting headsets to the base and accessing the username and password in the admin console.

The partnership also didn’t end once the phones were installed. The Pettigrew Regional Library system is working with Brightspeed for guidance and support with E-Rate, a federal program that helps schools and libraries offset the cost of eligible telecommunications. This ongoing support helps keep these services both modern and financially sustainable for the libraries.

“The Brightspeed team was easy to talk to, they assured me that I would have the support I needed to get everything set up, and it was a really pleasant experience. It's been a good working relationship.”
