Information about non-Brightspeed modems

Non-Brightspeed (also referred to as "third party") modems have not been tested with the Brightspeed network. Brightspeed highly recommends using one of our approved and certified modems, which have been tested and approved to work optimally with our high-speed internet technology.

Brightspeed technicians will not be able to install service using non-Brightspeed equipment. So, if a professional installation is required for new service, your technician will opt for a new recommended Brightspeed WiFi gateway to set up and optimize the connection. After the installation is complete, and you are able to successfully connect a third-party modem, you can return the Brightspeed modem.

Please note that modems from cable internet providers do not work with Brightspeed internet service.

To order a Brightspeed-certified modem, chat with customer service.

Important to know about using third-party equipment

  • We cannot guarantee that third-party modems will work with the Brightspeed network.

  • You will only receive limited technical support from Brightspeed in case service issues occur while using a third-party modem.

  • Third-party equipment is not covered under Brightspeed's equipment replacement program.

If you understand and accept these risks and would like to use a third-party modem, you will need to get support from the modem's manufacturer. Though there are some similarities across brands, it's best to get instructions specific to your particular model's features and settings. Go to the manufacturer website (for example, Netgear, Motorola, D-Link, etc.) and search for the specific model name/number to find any user guides or help articles offered by the respective manufacturers, as well as customer support contact information.

How to install a non-Brightspeed modem

If you have active Brightspeed internet service, you can follow these general setup tips:

  1. Connect your modem to a power outlet and a phone jack.

  2. Contact Brightspeed tech support to find out if your modem is "talking" to the Brightspeed network, and to get the right credentials to connect your third-party modem.
