What to expect when installing a modem you already have

Thank you for choosing Brightspeed for your internet service! If you are providing your own modem for your service, there are a few things you'll need to know about installation and activation.

Important: If you have not already done so, please verify that your modem is compatible with your new service. If you are re-using a newer Brightspeed modem, it will most likely work. To be sure, check our compatibility page and then contact us with any questions.

Re-using a Brightspeed modem

If you are re-using a Brightspeed modem that you already have:

  1. Plug in the modem and perform a factory resetThis is necessary to clear the previous credentials and allow the equipment to connect to your new service.

  2. Connect your modem with an Ethernet cord. After you've completed the reset, the modem should connect automatically. For more guidance, see this modem set-up page.

Using a non-Brightspeed modem

If you are using a non-Brightspeed modem, you will need to chat with us to get credentials (PPoE, vpi/vci, and password), which you will manually enter to your modem using the GUI.

You won't be able to connect your modem without these credentials.

Note about line activation: Your line should be activated no later than 7 p.m. on your service start date, at which point you can connect your modem.
